Spotify Premium changes how you listen, not whether you can: no ads, any song in any order, music downloads and lossless audio. Whether that is worth having depends almost entirely on where you listen, and if it is, there are a few ways to get it without the cost coming out of your own pocket.
What actually differs
Checked on spotify.com/us and support.spotify.com as of October 2026:
Premium Individual also adds lossless audio, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, and 15 hours of audiobooks a month from the subscriber catalog. For the current limits on Free, such as skips and audio quality, check the plan comparison on spotify.com/us/premium.
Downloads have their own limits even on Premium: Spotify caps them at 10,000 tracks and 5 devices, and you have to go online at least once every 30 days to keep them.
Who can stay on Free
You listen at a desk or through a speaker. If music is background and you rarely choose the exact track, ads are the only real cost.
You mostly listen to podcasts. Free already lets you download podcasts for offline listening.
You are happy with shuffle. If you put on a playlist and let it run, Smart Shuffle changes little for you.
You are always on Wi-Fi. Offline downloads solve a problem you do not have.
Who actually needs Premium
Commuters and travelers. Subways, flights and rural drives are where offline music matters. On Free, music does not download at all.
People on a limited data plan. Downloading over Wi-Fi and playing offline uses no mobile data.
Album listeners. If you want track one, then track two, in order, on your phone, Free does not give you that control.
People who work out or drive with music. An ad break and an unexpected song are more annoying when your hands are busy.
People with good headphones or speakers. Lossless audio is a Premium feature. On a phone speaker you will not hear the difference.
Audiobook listeners. The 15 monthly hours come with Premium Individual. On Family and Duo, only the plan manager gets them.

How to upgrade without paying
Start with the free month
Spotify offers one month of Premium Individual or Premium Student free to people who have not tried Premium before. It needs a regular payment method (the trial terms exclude prepaid cards and Spotify gift cards) and it renews into a paid plan unless you cancel before the month is up.
Use the month as a test. Count how often you actually play something offline or pick a specific album. If the answer is “rarely”, go back to Free and you have lost nothing.
Check whether someone at home already pays
A Family plan has six seats and a Duo plan has two. If a person at your address manages one with a seat open, they can invite you, and you get your own Premium account with your own library. You confirm the same home address when you join. This only applies to people who really live together.
Cover the bill with reward points
If neither applies, the remaining option is to pay with money you earned for this purpose. On CashyGo, tasks pay points, 1,000 points is $1, and you can cash out from 5,000 points ($5).
For a small recurring bill, surveys are the steady option: they usually pay 500 to 5,000 points each, and you can see how they work on the paid surveys page.
