Free DoorDash Delivery: Skip the Fees Without DashPass

Free DoorDash Delivery: Skip the Fees Without DashPass

The one guaranteed way to pay no DoorDash fees without a membership is to choose Pickup. DoorDash’s fee page says customers can order “via Pickup with zero fees”. For actual delivery, you cannot make every fee disappear, but you can avoid several of them by changing how you order.

This article is about fees only, for US customers, based on DoorDash’s help center as of October 2026.

The fees on a delivery order

DoorDash lists these on its “What fees do I pay” page:

The tip is not a fee. DoorDash says Dashers receive 100% of customer tips and that tipping is always optional.

1. Pick it up yourself

Switch the toggle from Delivery to Pickup before you build the cart. DoorDash states there are no service fees on pickup orders, and describes pickup as zero fees. You still order and pay in the app, so any gift card balance or account credit still applies.

If the restaurant is on your way home, this removes every item in the list above.

2. Compare delivery fees before you choose a restaurant

Because the delivery fee is fixed per order and varies by merchant, two similar restaurants can cost different amounts to order from. The fee is shown on each store’s listing before you open it.

3. Stay above the small order threshold

DoorDash says a small order fee may be charged when the subtotal is below a certain amount, and the cart shows it before you pay. If you are just under, adding a drink or a side you will actually use can cost less than the fee.

4. Order from closer by

The long distance fee applies to deliveries from farther away, and DoorDash says the service fee also varies with distance. A restaurant that is close to you usually means a lower total.

5. Add a second store with DoubleDash

When you need something from a second place, DoorDash’s DoubleDash feature lets you add items from nearby stores or restaurants to your original order, in DoorDash’s words “with no additional delivery fee” and no order minimum. Both orders usually arrive with the same Dasher.

DoorDash’s page does not say whether a service fee applies to the added items, so check the total before confirming.

6. Split one order instead of placing several

A group order lets several people add their own items to one cart through a shared link. Only the person who starts it needs a DoorDash account, and DoorDash says group orders can be set up as much as four days ahead. One order means one delivery fee rather than one per person.

Getting DashPass benefits without paying for DashPass

DashPass is the product DoorDash built for this: members get $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders that meet the subtotal minimum, from merchants marked as participating. There are three ways to have it without being charged.

The free trial. DoorDash says a free trial is available to first-time users, and that when it ends you are automatically enrolled in the plan you chose at sign-up. Two details from its cancellation page matter:

So set a reminder for two days before the trial ends instead of cancelling on day one.

Someone shares theirs. DoorDash’s Family Sharing lets the main account holder on most standard monthly and annual plans share DashPass with one other account at a time, in the same country. DoorDash says the shared account is never charged. Plans that come through partners such as Chase or Mastercard cannot be shared.

Student offers. DoorDash has a discounted Student DashPass for verified college students, and it has run limited sign-up windows in which eligible students at select universities who are not already subscribers got 12 months free, after which the membership moves to the paid student plan. These windows have end dates, so check the Student DashPass terms in DoorDash’s help center to see whether one is open.

Fees you cannot dodge, and how to cover them

The regulatory response fee and the weather impact fee apply regardless of membership, and the delivery service fee stays unless you have DashPass.

What you can do is pay those from balance you did not buy. DoorDash gift cards are redeemable toward any eligible order in the US, do not expire and carry no fees. On CashyGo, tasks on the Earn page pay points at 1,000 points = $1, the minimum cashout is 5,000 points ($5), and DoorDash is one of the gift cards US users can request on the withdraw page, where the available card amounts are shown. Cashouts are usually approved within 24 hours and codes arrive after approval.

CashyGo does not guarantee any income; it depends on the offers in your country and your effort.

What to ignore

Codes and apps that promise “unlimited free delivery” are not real. Fees are calculated on DoorDash’s servers at checkout.

FAQ

Is DoorDash pickup really free?

DoorDash says pickup orders have no service fees and describes pickup as zero fees. You pay for the food and tax.

Does the first order have free delivery?

New-customer offers change often and DoorDash’s fee page does not promise one. Open the promos shown at checkout on your first order. The terms there say whether the delivery fee is waived and what minimum subtotal applies.

If I cancel a DashPass trial early, do I keep the benefits until it ends?

No. DoorDash says benefits end immediately if you cancel during a free period.
